A chaotic, yet warm and loving family take a road trip through a scenic mountainous region far from city limits. The dad rides in the backseat with a broken leg, but is it really broken? Sitting beside him is his younger son, who bursts into song and dance at every waking moment. Riding shotgun is the mom, who tries to hide her tears with laughter. Sitting behind the wheel is the parents’ older son, who navigates them through endless twists and turns on a never-ending road. But why is the big brother so quiet and where is he driving the family to?
A powerful, heartfelt, and remarkably mature debut, Hit the Road transcends from a vibrant and playful road movie into a story of love, pain, hopes, and fears, set against the backdrop of a turbulent social context where freedom comes at a very heavy price.

Panah Panahi
Panah Panahi was born in Tehran in 1984 and majored in cinema at Tehran University of Art. During his studies, he directed his first short film, which went on to make its rounds on both the domestic and international film festival circuits, taking home several awards in the process. Later on, Panah worked on a number of films as a still photographer before moving up into the roles of assistant cinematographer and assistant director.
Eventually, Panah started working as a consultant, editor, and assistant director on Jafar Panahi’s most recent films. Hit the Road marks Panah Panahi’s first feature-length film, which premiered at Cannes International Film Festival to overwhelming critical acclaim and has since travelled to a long list of renowned film festivals all across the globe, including Karlovy Vary, London IFF, and many more.

Mina’s life is turned upside down when she learns that her husband Babak was innocent of the crime for which he was condemned and executed. The authorities express their regret for the mistake, offer her financial compensation and consider the matter closed. But it isn’t closed for Mina who, for the sake of herself and her daughter, begins a silent battle against a cynical system and demands a public apology. Just as her money is running out, a stranger named Reza knocks at her door saying he has come to repay a debt he owed to her husband. Mina is guarded at first, but increasingly lets Reza into her life, unaware of the secret that ties them together.

Behtash Sanaeeha, Maryam Moghaddam
Behtash Sanaeeha began his career in cinema writing scripts and directing short films, documentaries, and commercials. He wrote and directed two animated series and a made-for-TV film before going on to direct his first fictional feature, Risk of Acid Rain, which was screened at more than 30 international festivals. Ballad of a White Cow is Behtash’s second fictional feature; it premiered in the main competition at the Berlinale and was met with a fleet of five-star reviews. Since its premiere, the film has travelled to other prestigious film festivals around the world, including Karlovy Vary, Tribeca, and Zurich International Film Festival, taking home numerous awards in the process.
Maryam Moghaddam is an Iranian actress, screenwriter and director who graduated from the Performing Arts School in Gothenburg, Sweden. She has worked as an actress for various Swedish theatres, including Göteborg’s Stadsteater. She has also starred in a number of internationally acclaimed Iranian films, including Jafar Panahi and Kambuzia Partovi’s Closed Curtain, which premiered at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival in 2013 and won the Silver Bear.

But alas, nothing in life is promised; and soon, after enduring an impeccable string of misfortunes that play out like a life-or-death game of snakes and ladders, fate pushes Rahim over the edge and past the point of no return.
Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes and praised by audience and critics alike, this is a richly textured take on slander, social media, and societal collapse by the most prominent figure in Iranian cinema: Asghar Farhadi.
